Red Light Therapy in the UAE: How It Works, What the Evidence Shows and How to Choose a Panel

Last updated November 2026. Educational information only; it is not medical advice.

Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation (PBM), has become one of the most talked-about recovery and skincare tools in the UAE. This guide explains what it is, why interest is so high here, what the research does and does not show, and how to choose between trying a session, renting a device or buying one.

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy exposes the skin to low levels of red and near-infrared light, typically in the range of about 600 to 950 nanometres. It uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) rather than heat, and sessions are painless and short. Devices range from small handheld tools to full-body panels, mats and beds.

Why interest is so high in the UAE

  • High trial rates: a 2025 survey published by wellness-technology brand BON CHARGE reported that 70% of UAE adults had tried red light therapy, compared with 34% in the US, 32% in Australia and 21% in the UK, with 30% of UAE users using it monthly. This is a brand-commissioned survey, so treat the exact figures with caution, but it points to strong awareness (reported by Arabian Business, January 2025).
  • Sleep and skin: in the same survey, 67% of UAE respondents said they struggle with sleep and 62% were unhappy with their skin, which are the two main reasons people try red light.
  • Early adopters: PwC research cited in the report found 67% of Middle East consumers want to be among the first to try new technology, against 48% globally.
  • A growing global market: the global red light therapy market was estimated at about USD 1.24 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach about USD 1.7 billion by 2030 (Emergen Research, as cited by Arabian Business).

What does the research say?

A 2023 systematic review in the Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte examined 15 randomised trials with 428 participants and concluded that photobiomodulation helped skeletal muscle recover after exercise. Most studies reported better maximal voluntary contraction and time to exhaustion, and lower markers of muscle damage such as creatine kinase. The strongest effects appeared when light was applied before exercise.

The review also lists important limits: wavelengths and doses varied widely, samples were small and mostly male, and some studies found no benefit. Results for skin, sleep and mood depend on the device, dose and consistency, and research there is still developing. In short, red light is a promising, low-risk recovery habit, but results vary from person to person.

Try before you commit

If you are not sure which format suits you, book a guided session at Restore, Sunset Mall, Dubai. Our PBM Red Light service covers a larger area of the body. To test at home first, rent a Red Light Panel or a Red Light Mat, and read our rent or buy guide.

What to look for when buying

  • Wavelengths: look for stated red and near-infrared wavelengths, not just a colour.
  • Coverage and distance: bigger panels treat more area; check the recommended distance and time.
  • Build and safety: look for a clear manual and eye-protection guidance.
  • Warranty and support: choose a seller in the UAE that can help after purchase.

Avoid looking directly into bright LEDs, and check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, are taking photosensitising medication, have a light-sensitive condition or have a history of skin cancer.

Frequently asked questions

What is red light therapy used for?

People use it as part of recovery routines after training, for skin appearance and for general wellness. Research on muscle recovery is the most developed, but results vary.

How often should I use red light therapy?

Many people use it several times a week for short sessions. Follow the device manufacturer's guidance and build up gradually.

Is red light therapy safe?

It is generally considered low risk when used as directed. Protect your eyes and speak to a doctor if you are pregnant, use photosensitising medication or have a skin condition.

Does red light therapy work before or after exercise?

In the 2023 systematic review, the strongest effects on muscle performance were seen when light was applied before exercise, though many people also use it after training.

Should I buy a red light panel or book a session?

Book a session if you want to test it. Buy a panel if you plan to use it several times a week at home. Rentals sit in between.
